Childhood lessons still apply…

Remember the classic story of The Little Engine that Could™ where an insignificant switch-engine determinately pulled a train full of toys up a rugged mountain while chanting "I think I can!"? The obvious message is about the power of a positive attitude and the courage to try to be all we can.

But there is more to this story than that. Looking at the other helpful characters in the story, we see strong positive attributes that make our world a better place—initiative, persistence, optimism, encouragement, caring, support, belief, teamwork and willingness to help.

The most important lesson is this… it does not matter what our level of ability is, the biggest limitation is that of our mindset. The story sends us a strong, time-honored message about the power of positive thought and the courage to try to be all that we can be. To help you apply the message, answer the following questions. Then, in the words of Dr. Laura, “…go do the right thing!”

• What do I need to do to become the person I want to be?

• How can I improve my current circumstances?

• What can I do to build on my strengths?

• What can I do to be more consistent in my efforts?

• What can I do to devote more time to my priorities?

• What increases my motivation and commitment? How can I foster these conditions for the people I work with?

• How can I add value for my customers?
